If you thought that Notre Dame and Ohio State reached the College Football Playoff Final by being the best teams in the field, you’re wrong. At least as far as Notre Dame starting quarterback Riley Leonard is concerned.
Speaking to the media ahead of the national title game between the Fighting Irish and Buckeyes on Monday, January 20, the 22-year-old ND QB said that he believes the two schools have something in common, and that’s their public displays of faith.
Due to these public displays of faith, Leonard reasons, Jesus has decided to look over their shoulder and “put them on a pedestal.” Essentially, Leonard believes Jesus is a Notre Dame and Ohio State fan.
“We’re the two main teams to just publicly display our faith the most. … I truly believe that Jesus was looking over both our shoulders throughout the season and put these two teams on a pedestal for a reason,” Leonard told the media this week.

Given that Leonard is equating faith to the success of the respective football teams, one has to wonder what Big J thinks about Northern Illinois University, who shockingly upset Notre Dame this year, or Oregon and Michigan, who both beat Ohio State earlier in the season. Once the playoffs started, did Jesus look at the bracket and recalibrate his rooting interests? Or perhaps he had a little money on NIU this day and bent the rules with his allegiances. What about the years neither ND nor OSU make the Final? Maybe Joe Burrow, Ja’Marr Chase and the rest of the LSU crew weren’t just throwing Hail Mary’s, but saying them, too. Hitch routes and hymns, stogies and scripture.
It also begs the question what kind of view Jesus watches the games from. Does he sit on a couch made of clouds and watch on a holographic 200-inch television, or does he sort of just look down upon them as if he were hovering above in a blimp? Leonard has obviously decided that Jesus watches football, so perhaps he’ll have an answer to the question of *how* he does so, too.
The College Football Playoff National Championship game between the Notre Dame Fighting Irish and the Ohio State Buckeyes will kick off from Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, Georgia at 8:00 p.m. EST on Monday, January 20.
