Golf can produce some pretty awesome moments of theater. In the final round of Sunday’s Genesis Scottish Open, the precursor to the Open Championship, native Scotsman Robert MacIntyre gave us some incredible moments

MacIntyre rallied to play the final five holes in -4, including an incredible eagle at the 16th and a birdie at the 18th to win by one shot in the biggest win over his career. But, there was drama involved regarding a controversial free drop that he was granted, creating tons of discussion online.

After birdieing the 14th hole to get to -15, and then parred the 15th hole, bringing him to the par-5 16th.  Robert MacIntyre hit his drive into the thick stuff, but got a free drop due a sprinkler head to make his lie just a little bit better. Then, he hit one of the best golf shots you’ll see all year. Take a look.

Yeah, he got the drop, and many on social media seem to think he shouldn’t have. But, that’s an unreal shot.  He made the short eagle putt to get to -17, and a par at 17 brought him to 18 tied for the lead at that score.

After a solid approach shot, he left himself with a 22-foot putt to win his national championship. And, he drilled it. Turn the sound on to hear a great call by Jim Nantz.

It’s the second big win of the summer for Robert MacIntyre, as he won the RBC Canadian Open back in early June. The 27-year-old is quickly establishing himself as one of the better players on tour.

I’m sure this win was incredibly special, given that it is his own national championship, and the $1.575 million prize won’t be too bad, either.  He will remember that approach shot on 16 and the putt on 18 for the rest of his life.
