Roger Maris, Jr. has been an annoyance this season as Aaron Judge broke his father’s home run record in the Bronx. The elder Maris, who’d hit 61 homers in the 1961 campaign, held both the franchise and American League marks for dingers in a season.
Judge bested those marks in the 2022 campaign, launching 62 home runs for the Yankees. But while Judge now holds the American League record, it actually ranks as just the seventh-best season total in baseball history.
Barry Bonds holds the No. 1 mark with 73 homers hit in 2001. Mark McGwire and Sammy Sosa recorded multiple seasons with more than 62 dingers.
Steroid use has led many baseball traditionalists (like Maris) to dismiss the marks, however.
Maris was blasted this year for saying that Judge is now the “Clean HR King,” and he’s now doubled down on those thoughts to annoy fans further.
Roger Maris, Jr. calls Aaron Judge and Giancarlo Stanton the true HR leaders.
By dismissing the feats of Bonds, McGwire, and Sosa, one can not only call Aaron Judge the American League single-season record holder, but they can also refer to Giancarlo Stanton as holding the National League mark.
Maris did just that in a Twitter post following the Yankees’ ALDS win over the Guardians.
Lots of fun seeing the home run champs hitting some bombs last night in New York to clinch the series. Giancarlo Stanton National League Single-Season Home Run Champ (59) and Aaron Judge Single Season All-Time Home Run Champ (62). Should be some fun baseball tonight in Houston.
Both Stanton and Judge hit homers in the series finale on Tuesday, which Maris took as an opportunity to blast his views across social media. Most fans were not impressed.
One fan said Maris is the sole reason he’ll be cheering on the Astros in the ALCS posting, “This man is actually the reason I will be rooting for team trash can.”
Another wrote, “Amazing how effortlessly this guy sucks,” in response to seeing the post.
This guy mocked Maris, commenting, “Lots of fun seeing the stupid tweet champ hitting some bombs this morning on the internet.”
It’s safe to say that most disagree with his viewpoint. Stanton and Judge will start their ALCS series with the Astros tonight. Hopefully, it won’t mean more nonsense from Maris.
