Boston Red Sox rookie outfielder Roman Anthony made his Major League debut this week during a series against the Tampa Bay Rays. His family went viral after he recorded his first hit on Tuesday night.
That hit was a two-run double that proved to be the difference in a 3-1 win. Family members were seen cheering him on from their seats near the Red Sox dugout.
Anthony was the top minor league prospect in baseball prior to being called up. He hit .288 in Triple-A this year to go along with 10 home runs across 58 games.
He joined the Boston roster on Monday, going 0-for-4 with an RBI in his first appearance. On Tuesday, he officially introduced himself to MLB viewers.
The rookie kicked off the scoring in the bottom of the first inning with a two-run opposite field double. It plated teammates Rafael Devers and Carlos Narvaez.

The extra base knock highlighted his abilities at the dish. He flashed his glove, too, with a slick sliding catch in right field to steal a hit from a Tampa Bay batter.

Roman Anthony’s family was loving it.
The quartet of his mom, dad, brother, and sister sat front row just outside the Boston dugout. His extended family, friends, and agency were also on hand. Images from the group’s reaction quickly went viral on social media.

Anthony has spoken on his family in the past. He hilariously detailed a story about his “very Italian” roots while speaking with former MLB first baseman Eric Hosmer in March.
“[My dad and brother] are both named Anthony Anthony, as well as my dad’s dad,” he said. “Very Italian… You should see the looks we get when we go on a family trip or we’re in an airport.”

In an interview with NESN, he dove in further. “It’s pretty ridiculous,” he said jokingly. “Our whole family, we’ve got a lot of Johns, a lot of Anthony Anthony’s. We didn’t really get too creative with it.”
While his father and brother stole a number of the headlines, his sister, Lia, also grabbed the attention of viewers. She detailed her experience in Fenway Park on her Instagram account, which can be found below.

After the game, the outfielder noted the importance of his family being in attendance. “It was awesome,” he said in a postgame interview.
“That group out there has been with me every step of the way. Just to see them here… it was special, for sure… Nobody gave me a heads up that they were going to be that close, but again, it was just awesome.”
Roman Anthony and his family stole the show on Tuesday night amid his incredible performance. We should expect to hear a lot more from the rookie superstar throughout the 2025 MLB season.
