Rory McIlroy had the 2024 US Open in his grasp. He led by two shots over Bryson Dechambeau after with just five holes to play, and was in total control of the tournament.

But, disaster struck for Rory McIlroy at Pinehurst, as he made three bogeys in the final five holes, including two short missed putts for par. The choke has hit McIlroy hard, as he stormed off the course just minutes after the completion of the tournament, declining to talk to the media.

Rory made four birdies in a five-hole stretch from 9-13 at Pinehurst No. 2 on Sunday to become the first player to get to -8.Β  But, a bogey due to a poor tee shot that sailed over the green at 15 dropped him a shot. That’s not a big deal, as everyone made bogeys out there this week. But, it’s the two short misses that will haunt him forever.

On 16, Rory had a routine 2 1/2 foot putt to clean up his par. But, he hit a terrible putt, pulling it to the left and hitting it through the break.

That tied him with DeChambeau. And on 18, after a another poor tee shot, Rory McIlroy needed to get up-and-down from short of the green to stay at -6 and put the pressure on Bryson, who was in a group behind.

He hit a pretty solid chip shot to just under 4 feet, but he missed again!

When Bryson Dechambeau converted an insane up-and-down from the front bunker, he denied Rory his first major win since 2014. And, Rory looked like he was going to be sick while watching in the clubhouse.

And, instead of sticking around and doing media appearances, Rory McIlroy wanted to get out of Pinehurst as fast as he could.

It was a terrible ending to a week that had even more of the spotlight on Rory than usual. After filing for divorce prior to the PGA Championship, he and his wife Erica announced they were getting back together.Β

Instead of the storybook ending, he got one of the most heartbreaking losses in golf history.
