Rory McIlroy hit the weirdest golf shot of The Open Championship during the third round on Saturday. It might be the most bizarre occurrence in the history of the sport and that is not hyperbole.

He somehow managed to resurrect a zombie ball!

Unfortunately, the 36-year-old dropped a stroke because he hit two golf balls on the same shot. The strange sequence of events ultimately led him to record a bogey on the 11th hole.

The Open Championship shows no mercy.

This year’s tournament is held at the Dunluce course at Royal Portrush Golf Club in Northern Ireland. Designed by Harry S. Colt, the world-renowned links course is known for its challenging layout.

The average score for an amateur golfer on the Par-71 Dunluce course sits around 85.7. According to data from Shot Scope, only 44% of amateurs hit the fairway with their tee shot. 28% find the greens in regulation with an up and down percentage of just 25%.

Rory McIlroy is obviously not an amateur but those numbers prove the challenge he and his fellow professionals face this weekend. It is an extremely difficult course.

Two balls, one swing.

McIlroy sat -6 through 46 holes at The Open Championship. He ripped a tee shot into the rough on 11.

The errant drive left him with a difficult second shot from the fescue. It was not his best but it could’ve been a lot worse considering what happened!

A second, unmarked and unplayed golf ball was buried in the dirt under McIlroy’s official ball. The second ball did not belong to another golfer in the field. There was no explanation for how it got there.

As McIlroy swung on his ball, he managed to unearth the second and hit two balls at once.

Rory McIlroy could not believe it!

The strange happenstance caused him second shot to die much sooner than he had hoped so he took a bogey on 11. However, the golf Gods were in his favor.

McIlroy got that stroke right back with a 56-foot putt for eagle on 12.

Lets call it a wash. Rory McIlroy hit two balls on the same shot and one of them wasn’t in play!
