NFL rules analyst Gene Steratore is chiming in on the Patrick Mahomes offensive offsides controversy.

On Sunday, Chiefs wide receiver Kadarius Toney was called for offensive offsides during a crucial play at the end of the Cbiefs-Bills game.

Mahomes threw a tirade on the sidelines and cursed out the refs after the call. During his postgame press conference, Mahomes explained that his team has never been called for offensive offsides in his seven years in the league.

“For a flag to change the outcome of the game, in that moment, I’ve played seven years and never offensive offsides called…they warn you, there was no warning throughout the entire game and you wait until a minute left in the game to make a call like that, it’s tough man.”

CBS rules analyst Gene Steratore explained that offensive offsides aren’t usually called, but it was called in this instance because of how blatantly obvious it was.

“When officiating the line of scrimmage, general philosophy is not to be overly technical and split hairs over very minor infractions (such as a receiver’s hand slightly breaking the LOS). However, when an infraction is so egregious and obvious, a flag has to be thrown.”

“Kadarius Toney is blatantly lined up offside and in the neutral zone. You rarely see an offsides penalty on the offense, but that is not because this play in #BUFvsKC isn’t a foul.”

“It is because a receiver rarely lines up offsides.”
