Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt’s new movie The Fall Guy is now playing in movie theaters and, while the film is largely earning rave reviews from both critics and audiences, one particular line of dialogue from the film seems to be causing a bit of controversy.

At some point in the movie, the characters of Emily Blunt and Hannah Waddingham walk into a totally destroyed movie star trailer, which prompts Waddingham to say “It’s like Amber and Johnny were just in here.”

Given the fervor that surrounded the legal fallout between the two, the punchline in The Fall Guy has angered a certain section of the internet.

The Fall Guy made a distasteful ‘joke’ about the domestic abuse Amber [Heard] suffered at the hands of Johnny [Depp]. It’s 2024, why are we writing these kinds of lines into movies? Nasty work,” reads one tweet.

The Depp vs. Heard trial was held in Fairfax County, Virginia, from April to June 2022 and saw Depp sue Heard for $50 million in damages via defamation charges, while Heard filed counterclaims and sought $100 million in damages.

Heard was ultimately found liable in all three of Depp’s claims of defamation, while Depp was found liable in one of Heard’s three claims. Depp was awarded $10 million in compensatory damages and $5 million in punitive damages, while Award was award $2 million and $0, respectively.

The Fall Guy, directed by Atomic Blonde and Bullet Train filmmaker David Leitch, features Gosling as a stunt man who gets drawn into a criminal underworld after the star of the movie he’s working on, and Blunt is directing, goes missing.

In addition to the A+ list duo of Gosling and Blunt, The Fall Guy also stars Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Hannah Waddingham, Teresa Palmer, Stephanie Hsu, and Winston Duke.

Check out the official synopsis and trailer for The Fall Guy below.

“He’s a stuntman, and like everyone in the stunt community, he gets blown up, shot, crashed, thrown through windows and dropped from the highest of heights, all for our entertainment. And now, fresh off an almost career-ending accident, this working-class hero has to track down a missing movie star, solve a conspiracy and try to win back the love of his life while still doing his day job. What could possibly go right?”

“From real life stunt man and director David Leitch, comes his most personal film yet — a new hilarious, hard-driving, all-star apex-action thriller and love letter to action movies and the hard-working and under-appreciated crew of people who make them: The Fall Guy.”
