The Sam Houston State football team fell for a seventh straight time in the 2025 season on Wednesday. The Bearkats dropped to 0-7 on the year after losing to UTEP.

Absolutely nobody showed up to watch the home team try and get its first win. Unfortunately, it’s become a weekly occurrence.

Sam Houston State transitioned to the FBS in 2023. It went 3-9 in its debut season before ripping off 10 victories in 2024.

Head coach KC Keeler buoyed that success into a job at Temple. The drop-off following his departure has been felt.

Sam Houston State football is bad.

In fact, it’s been one of the nation’s worst teams on both sides of the ball. The offense ranks 128th (out of 136) in scoring. The defense is 133rd in points allowed.

The Bearkats are an awful product at the moment. No one is interested in spending their time or money to attend the games.

It was seen last week when the team came excruciatingly close to its first victory only to lose on the final play against Jacksonville State. A crowd of 5,419 was announced.

This week’s attendance was even smaller.

Nobody showed up to watch the Bearkats.

The final attendance was announced at 4,657 fans, and that was probably generous. For reference, Shell Energy Stadium holds a capacity of more than 20,000.

The scene was one of desolation. Small groups of fans were scattered throughout the 80% vacant venue.

The emptiness can be attributed to a few different things. Obviously, the Sam Houston State football team’s poor play is a factor. The stadium location is also a contributor.

The Bearkats have played at Bowers Stadium on campus since 1986. That venue is currently under construction.

A renovation will keep the program off of its home field for the entirety of the 2025 college football season. As a result, Sam Houston State is playing more than an hour down the road in Houston.

Not many fans were eager to brave Texas traffic on a Wednesday evening to watch a winless team lose again in its makeshift stadium. It’s pretty clear everyone is ready to get back to normalcy in 2026.
