One year ago, Arizona State quarterback Sam Leavitt, helped lead the Sun Devils to a Big 12 championship and a spot in the College Football Playoff alongside star running back Cam Skattebo.

Now, it appears that Leavitt and ASU are set to go their separate ways after a difficult 2025 season that saw both parties fall well short of their expectations.

The Sun Devils entered the 2025 season ranked No. 11 in the country and the favorites to repeat in the Big 12. But they immediately struggled and finished just 8-4. Leavitt, meanwhile, played in just seven games due to injury. He completed 60.7 percent of his passes for 1,628 yards, 10 touchdowns and three interceptions, while rushing for a further 300 yards and five scores.

In mid-November, On3 Sports reported that Leavitt had likely played his last game for Arizona State.

“On3’s Steve Wiltfong and Pete Nakos have learned that the camp of Arizona State quarterback Sam Leavitt is actively shopping the talented passer “at a high level” to other programs with the plan of entering the Transfer Portal when the window opens on Jan. 2,” the report stated.

Leavitt’s brother Dallin, who represents Sam as his agent via CAA, now denied On3’s report, claiming that Sam has not determined his next step.

But now it appears that the report was correct.

Sam Leavitt Skipped Arizona State’s Team Banquet After A Disappointing 2025 Season

On Sunday night, Arizona State beat writer Chris Karpman shared a telling report about Leavitt’s future. According to Karpman, Leavitt was the only team captain not to appear at the year-end banquet, while every other team captain took the stage individually to be honored.

Now, in theory, Leavitt could well have had a prior engagement. But it’s not like he didn’t know when the banquet was. And you’d usually expect all your team captains to be in attendance, especially your starting quarterback.

But if that quarterback isn’t going to be on the team next season because he’s going to play for a different school, suddenly that expectation changes.

Maybe Leavitt returns to Tempe in 2026. But it it sure doesn’t look that way if his actions are any indication.
