After winning the NFC championship on Sunday, The San Francisco 49ers have reportedly requested to wear their all-white 1994 throwback jerseys for upcoming Super Bowl in Miami , according to The Athletic’s David Lombardi.

Historical tie: The 49ers wore these throwback uniforms at the Super Bowl to close the 1994 season, but with red tops. Steve Young threw 6 touchdowns. This time, they are the designated road team, so it’d have to be the all-white throwbacks. Team’s big stars are in favor of this.

The 49ers will have to be granted permission by the NFL to wear the throwbacks and while they did initially deny the request it seems like they are considering changing their policy to allow the San Fran to wear their uniform of choice.
Adding onto this: Sherman told me that the NFL “is thinking about changing (the uniform) policy now,” so it sounds as if there’s a chance for the 49ers to be able to wear their ’94 all-whites to the Super Bowl if the NFL is convinced. It was Sherman who started the Week 17 push.

The Chiefs get to choose which jersey color the teams will wear in Miami and they’re likely to pick their reds which is good news for the Niners because 13 of the last 15 Super Bowl winners have worn white.
Chiefs get choice of jersey color because the AFC is home team in Super Bowl LIV, and they probably want to stay away from red.
