It appears that the World Cup games in San Francisco will go forward as planned.
Last week, President Trump threatened to move World Cup games out of San Francisco and Los Angeles if he didn’t believe the two cities were doing a good enough job of keeping people safe.
“If somebody is doing a bad job, and if I feel there are unsafe conditions, I would call Gianni the head of FIFA – and I would say, ‘Let’s move it to another location,’ and he would do that,” Trump said, referring to FIFA President Gianni Infantino.
“Gavin Newsom – he’s got to get his act together! If he doesn’t play ball, we’re gonna have to be very tough on them!”

Trump would later say he planned to recommend deploying federal agents in San Francisco to make the city safe ahead of the 2026 World Cup.
“I’m going to be strongly recommending at the request of govt officials, which is always nice, that you start looking at San Francisco. I think we can make San Francisco — one of our great cities 10 years ago, 15 years ago, and now it’s a mess.”
On Thursday, San Francisco Mayor Daniel Lurie said he spoke with Trump and that the President has backed off his threats.

“Late last night, I received a phone call from the President of the United States. I told him the same thing I told our residents: San Francisco is on the rise. Visitors are coming back, buildings are getting leased and purchased, and workers are coming back to the office.”
“In that conversation, the president told me clearly that he was calling off any plans for a federal deployment in San Francisco. Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem reaffirmed that direction in our conversation this morning.”
“My team will continue to monitor the situation closely, and our city remains prepared for any scenario.”
President Trump confirmed that he had a conversation with Lurie.
