Less than two weeks removed from his knockout victory over Jake Paul, superstar boxer Anthony Joshua narrowly escaped death after a tragic, fatal car crash in Nigeria on Monday.

Reports state that Joshua was traveling in a two-vehicle convoy involving a Lexus SUV and a Mitsubishi Pajero SUV. The Lexus collided then colided with a stationary truck, reportedly killing both the driver and a passenger in the front seat.

Joshua, however, was in the back seat and escaped with only minor injuries. But videos and photos from the scene show that it was nearly much, much worse for the British boxer.

Anthony Joshua Escapes Fatal Car Crash With Minor Injuries

According to the BBC, road safety officials in Nigeria said five adult males were involved in the crash, two of whom have died. Two others “escaped unhurt”. Joshua was “rescued alive and sustained minor injuries. He was taken for medical attention.

The same officials stated that the Lexus SUV carrying Joshua was reportedly traveling “beyond the legally prescribed speed limit” and lost control when attempting to pass another vehicle.

Video from the aftermath shows a terrifying sight as Joshua, who was visibly in pain, is slowly helped from the back of the Lexus SUV.

Reports state Joshua was in Nigeria on vacation. The Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, where the crash occurred,  is one of Nigeria’s busiest highways. Stationary trucks and broken-down vehicles without warning markers are reportedly a common hazard.

The incident marks the second time this year a combat sports superstar was involved in a fatal vehicle accident in Africa. In April, for UFC star an ex-Joshua foe Francis Ngannou was involved in a motorcycle accident that led to the death of a 17-year-old girl.
