Ask any basketball fan what they think of ESPN’s basketball coverage and they’ll likely tell you they wish that they gave more airtime to former NBA sharpshooter Tim Legler.

Unfortunately for basketball fans, however, it appears that Legler looks set to leave ESPN, as his contract is reportedly set to expire.

Appearing on SportsCenter with SVP following Game 5 of the 2024 NBA Finals, Scott Van Pelt — who has a habit of saying the right thing at the right time — gave Legler a heartfelt sendoff.

“This wraps up the end of it, there’s nobody who I enjoy sitting with more, watching the games, doing this with, and I love the fact that, whether it’s podcasts, or going to do games, I feel like NBA Twitter and NBA fans get that this dude is the best there is,” Van Pelt said.

“And I hope that the bosses — I don’t want to lose ya — but if we lose ya some because you’re out there doing games, that will be cool with me, because you’re not good at this, man, you’re great at this. Nobody’s better talking about basketball than Tim Legler, and I think everybody out there gets it, and we’re just lucky that we get to sit here with you and do it.”

Van Pelt seems to be referencing that, because reports indicate that the NBA will be doling out its broadcasting rights to new networks such as NBC and Prime Video, Legler — who has been at ESPN since the year 2000 — could be a candidate to be hired by those networks to either call or analyst games.
