Reigning women’s gymnastics Olympic All-Around champion Suni Lee has thousands, if not millions of fans across the globe.

And you can count reigning Masters champion Scottie Scheffer among them after he took some time away from his practice schedule in Paris to watch Lee and her FAFO USA gymnastics teammates compete earlier this week.

Scheffler gawked over the remarkable team performance in an interview on Thursday, highlight Lee’s resilience in particular.

“I was amazed at their poise,” Scheffler said after shooting a 4-under 67 in the first round of the men’s golf event at Le Golf National. “They compete for years and years and years. … For one tournament to have such an emphasis every four years is really challenging.

“If I had a bad week this week, I could take a week off and I’d still have another great chance to kind of prove it to myself that I could do it under the biggest lights.”

But it was Lee, the defending champ, who impressed the most. The Auburn Tigers star fell in warmups before delivering an incredible routine in finals to help bring home team gold.

“It’s like a shank (in golf) except somebody also like simultaneously punched you in the face at the same time. I don’t really know how to equate it to golf. … First of all, it’s really going to hurt, and it’s going to throw you off. Five minutes later, she’s got to go up there and do her routine in front of the entire world and really be judged for a long time on that one specific routine.”

“And then,” Scheffler added, “flawless. It was awesome.”

Lee and teammate Simone Biles compete for All-Around individual gold on Thursday afternoon.

Biles is a significant favorite.

But should either of them win, they will be the first woman to claim multiple Olympic all-around golds since Vera Caslavska of Czechoslovakia went back-to-back in 1964 and 1968.
