Scottie Scheffler has been forced to skip a couple of events that ushered in the start of the current PGA Tour season due to an injury he suffered on Christmas. The timeline for his return is still up in the air, but we have some new insight into the reason he hasn’t been able to play: ravioli.
In 2024, Scottie Scheffler racked up seven victories on the PGA Tour—including wins at The Players and The Masters—and became the only player to win a gold medal at the Olympics the same year he was arrested during a tournament in the midst of one of the most impressive runs the golf world has seen in a while.
Scheffler currently has a firm grip on the top spot in the Official World Golf Rankings (a position he’s held since May of 2023), and there was little reason to doubt the 28-year-old wouldn’t pick up where he left off when the 2025 PGA Tour season kicked off with The Sentry at the start of January.
However, things took a fairly bizarre turn less than two weeks before the tournament got underway when Scheffler announced he’d been forced to undergo surgery to treat “a puncture wound to the palm of his right hand” caused by broken glass. He was initially hoping to recover in time to participate in The American Express at PGA West last week but was forced to withdraw due to the lingering ailment.
It wasn’t initially clear how Scheffler ended up with a bunch of “small glass fragments” in his hand in the first place, but on Monday, he revealed he was preparing homemade ravioli for Christmas dinner when the vessel he was presumably using to extract the individual pieces from the sheet of pasta dough shattered.
As things currently stand, Scheffler is planning to make his grand return when the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am gets underway on January 30th. He acknowledged his usual training regimen has been impacted by his inability to use his right hand but seems confident he’ll be able to shake the rust off once he’s healthy enough to get back on the course.
