Scottie Scheffler’s Bizarre PGA Championship Took Another Strange Turn On Saturday

Perhaps no golfer has ever had as chaotic of a PGA Championship weekend as that of world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler.

Scheffler entered as the tournament favorite but under unique circumstances after the birth of his first child on Tuesday. Things got even more bizarre when he was shockingly arrested prior to the second round on Friday after an incident with a police officer directing traffic.

But things got even stranger on Saturday. Scheffler had to call in PGA Tour chaplain Brad Payne to caddie for him after full-time caddie Ted Scott left to attend his daughter’s high school graduation.

Golf Magazine’s Dylan Dethier reports that Scheffler and Scott coordinated the change. Scott plans to return for Sunday’s final round.

But the damage may already be done.

Scheffler shot three over on his first three holes on Saturday. That dropped him from a tie for fourth into a tie for 21st. He currently sits six shots behind leader Xander Schauffele.

Despite the turmoil, Scheffler has remained the picture of poise off the course.

“This morning, I was proceeding as directed by police officers. It was a very chaotic situation, understandably so considering the tragic accident that had occurred earlier, and there was a big misunderstanding of what I thought I was being asked to do,” he said following Friday’s arrest. “I never intended to disregard any of the instructions. I’m hopeful to put this to the side and focus on golf today.

“Of course, all of us involved in the tournament express our deepest sympathies to the family of the man who passed away in the earlier accident this morning. It truly puts everything in perspective.”

Despite his calm demeanor, the chaos may finally be catching up with him. Though if he wins, he’s going to have one hell of a story to tell for years to come.
