The Texas basketball program officially moved on from coach Rodney Terry on Sunday. His tenure comes to an end after three seasons.

The Longhorns fell in the play-in round of the NCAA Tournament after barely sneaking into the field. They’ve already found a replacement in Sean Miller.

Miller’s name should sound familiar to Texas fans. He ended the team’s season in the Big Dance. Miller’s coached at Xavier for the last three seasons. He’s led the Musketeers to two NCAA Tournament appearances in that time.

Sean Miller is a known commodity in college basketball. Prior to his most recent stint with Xavier, he spent more than a decade at Arizona.

Miller was fired amid controversy by the Wildcats, who were entangled in the 2017 FBI investigation into player payments. Despite the dismissal, he’s shown a track record of success at every stop. Texas hopes that continues.

Sean Miller ended the Longhorns’ season.

Xavier beat Texas 86-80 in the NCAA Tournament. That loss was the straw that broke the camel’s back in terms of Rodney Terry’s future in Austin.

Reports swirled soon after the ‘Horns postseason loss. Most believed a deep run was needed to secure the coach’s job status.

Those rumors turned into reality on Sunday. Terry was paid $5.4 million in buyout money due to the firing. It proved costly for the Longhorns! Now, Texas will turn to the man that handed the program that expensive defeat.

Sean Miller will be the Longhorns’ coach in the 2025-26 season. Rodney Terry will hope to land somewhere else while counting his millions.
