Sean Miller made it sound like he was going to stay at Xavier forever and then he immediately left for Texas after just three seasons. The college basketball fanbase in Cincinnati is furious.

They made it so that the new head coach of the Longhorns had to use an undesirable username on X. It is one of the funniest and pettiest sagas in recent sports history.

Miller, one of the sweatiest men in college basketball, got his first head coaching job at Xavier in 2004. He spent five years in the Queen City and reached the NCAA Tournament in four of five years. The Musketeers reached the Elite Eight in 2008.

Nobody expected Miller to stay at Xavier forever (the first time) but it seemed like he was pretty content. And then Arizona called. The Wildcats hired him away in 2009.

Miller won five Pac-10/Pac-12 regular season championships, three Pac-12 tournament titles and was thrice named as the Pac-12 Men’s Basketball Coach of the year. Arizona reached the NCAA Tournament in seven of his first nine years at the helm. It failed to do so in 2019, 2020 and 2021, which led to the ouster of its head coach.

Xavier gave Miller the opportunity to return in 2022 and it seemed like he was focused on taking the program to new heights. It was not a stepping stone like it was the first time. He wanted to give back to the program that made him a head coach in 2004. The Musketeers reached the Sweet Sixteen in his first year back. They lost in the first round of March Madness on Friday.

As it would turn out, Sean Miller was not loyal to Xavier after all. Texas hired him as its new head coach on Monday.

Musketeers fans are furious. Their school gave Miller a second chance and he bailed on them again.

In response, they snatched up all of his potential usernames on X, formerly Twitter, so that the traitorous head coach could not have them. He used to be @CoachMillerXU and needed to make a change for the new job. However, the following usernames are all occupied by Xavier fans:

  • @CoachMillerUT
  • @UTCoachMiller
  • @UTSeanMiller
  • @SeanMillerUT
  • @CoachMillerTX
  • @SeanMillerTX
  • @CoachMiller_
  • @SeanMiller_
  • @CoachMiller_UT
  • @SeanMiller_UT
  • @UT_CoachMiller
  • @UT_SeanMiller
  • @txseanmiller
  • @txcoachmiller
  • @coachmillerUT_
  • @UTCoachSMiller
  • @UTXCoachMiller
  • @UT_Miller
  • @CoachMiller
  • @CoachMiller_TX
  • @SeanMiller_TX

As a result, Sean Miller was forced to go with @CoachMiller__ with two underscores at the end. It is a horrible username but it was the only one available. College sports fans are the best!
