Colorado star quarterback Shedeur Sanders may or may not wind up as a finalist for the 2024 Heisman Trophy. Sanders is currently tied for the eighth-best odds to win the award. But whether or not he’s a finalist, Sanders locked up a guaranteed spot at the Heisman Trophy ceremony in New York City on Dec. 14.
That’s because of superstar teammate Travis Hunter, who currently has the best odds to win the award ahead of Boise State running back Ashton Jeanty and Miami’s quarterback Cam Ward. Speaking to media members on Thursday, Hunter made a pitch for Sanders to be a Heisman Trophy finalist while also saying that he’d invite him to NYC either way.
“Even if he not invited, he’s invited,” Hunter said on a media Zoom call.
Meanwhile, Sanders showed the same type of love by campaigning for Hunter to win the award.
“Travis Hunter should win the Heisman. That is it,” he said. ” think he’s deserving of it. If it’s between me and him, I want him to get it. I am not a selfish guy. I want him to get it.”
Travis Hunter And Shedeur Sanders Have Both Played At A Heisman-Winning Level
Hunter and Sanders are the superstars of a Buffaloes team that has defied all odds in 2024. They burst onto the scene a year ago after a 3-0 start before coming crashing back to earth and finishing 4-8. But this season has offered up a different path. After a 4-2 start, Colorado has ripped off four straight wins to move to 8-2 and give itself an inside track to the Big 12 championship game.
A victory in that game would secure the Buffaloes a spot in the inaugural 12-team College Football Playoff and could also result in a first-round bye.
Sanders has been brilliant, throwing for 3,222 yards, 27 touchdowns and just seven interceptions. As has Hunter, who leads the team with 74 receptions for 911 yards and nine touchdowns while also playing cornerback at the level of a first-round NFL Draft pick.
Both have compelling cases as Heisman Trophy finalists, and it appears that both, regardless of circumstance, will be on hand when the award is given out.
