Sherrone Moore has been fired by the University of Michigan for cause due to an alleged “inappropriate” relationship with a staff member. He was reportedly detained by police hours after the decision.

Moore had been with the Wolverines for two seasons as head coach after taking over for Jim Harbaugh. That stint was short-lived.

UM went 17-8 across those two years to make a pair of bowl game appearances. He appeared to have the team on an upward trajectory with a 9-3 output in 2025.

His future with the program is now over.

Sherrone Moore was fired.

“Sherrone Moore has been terminated, with cause, effective immediately,” AD Warde Manuel said in a statement. “Following a university investigation, credible evidence was found that Coach Moore engaged in an inappropriate relationship with a staff member.

“This conduct constitutes a clear violation of University policy, and UM maintains zero tolerance for such behavior.”

That not only costs the head coach his job, but it puts his buyout at risk. Moore was owed close to $14 million if fired by Michigan without cause.

The school may now be off the hook for most or all of that total, which represented 75% of his remaining contract.

Things went from bad to worse.

Hours after his termination, Sherrone Moore was reportedly detained by Michigan police.

Saline police chief Marlene Radzik confirmed that Pittsfield Township’s police department was handling a complaint involving Moore. Details have not been immediately made public.

An investigation is ongoing.
