Men’s college lacrosse is coming to St. Thomas University. However, the Bobcats do not currently have a roster so Matt Blamey has his eyes on the college football program in Miami.
The first-year head coach recently invited a group of athletes to come try a new sport and very quickly got them up to speed on an empty net.
It will be interesting to see how many of these college football players decide to make the switch to college lacrosse, if any. Perhaps the “tryout” was nothing more than a promotional stunt. Or maybe it is going to inspire a transitional wave of cross-sport and/or duel-sport athletes!
Where and what is St. Thomas University?
Before we go any further, the basic details about this institution of higher learning must first be established. St. Thomas University is located in Miami Gardens, Florida. The campus sits right on the border of Opa-locka, approximately 17 miles northeast of South Beach.

St. Thomas enrolls 5,922 students in total with just 1,797 undergraduates. It was founded in 1961 as Biscayne College until 1984 with religious ties to the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Miami.
The Bobcats compete in 29 varsity sports as a member of The Sun conference on the NAIA level. That number will soon increase to 30 with the addition of men’s lacrosse.
College lacrosse is coming to Miami.
St. Thomas University Men’s Lacrosse is scheduled to play its inaugural season in 2026-27. That gives head coach Matt Blamey approximately six months to assemble a full (23ish-man) roster so he will be out on the road over the next few weeks.

Not only is Blamey recruiting high school lacrosse players to his program, he is also kicking the tires on a unique transition for athletes who are already on campus. Much like Bill Belichick is recruiting lacrosse players to play football at North Carolina, Blamey is recruiting football players to play lacrosse. Kind of.
A group of St. Thomas football players recently picked up a wand to try a new sport. They were not great at first but they actually seemed to get the hang of it pretty quickly.
Honestly, if you were to give those guys a few months of practice, I genuinely believe they could reach a point where they could play for the Bobcats during their inaugural season. We’re not talking Duke here…
