Steve Sarkisian is the latest college football coach to say one thing and do another. He previously said that no Texas Longhorns player would be allowed back on the team if they chose to enter the transfer portal.
And then he allowed a player back on the team after he entered the transfer portal.
Although college football coaches must adapt to the hands they are dealt, they would be better off if they were to keep their mouths shut along the way. That way they cannot be called hypocrites.
Steve Sarkisian vowed not to let players return from the transfer portal.
Steve Sarkisian was hired as the head football coach at the University of Texas in 2021. This is his sixth time dealing with the transfer portal and NIL.
Players come and go. A sport that has adopted a professional model without any kind of regulation continues to be a revolving door. Some players enter the transfer portal in search of a raise from their current programs. Other players enter the transfer portal in search of a raise from an outside suitor.
We are also to the point now that coaches are at liberty to effectively cut their own players who they do not want to return. The athletes sign financial agreements. If their deals expire, the school is not required to bring them back. It’s business.
With that in mind, Sarkisian spoke about his approach to the transfer portal during a conversation on The Pivot Podcast back in 2023. He made it abundantly clear that he was not going to allow a player who considered a future elsewhere to crawl back to Texas.
As we get into transfer portal szn, here's a reminder where Sark stands on players entering the portal:

"The moment you go in the portal at UT, you're no longer coming back…we're not playing that game here. If you wanna go in the portal, go in the portal and good luck to you" pic.twitter.com/hJse7f1IW7
Just to reiterate, verbatim:
“The moment you go in the transfer portal at the University of Texas, you’re no longer coming back.”
Quite the statement! If you enter the transfer portal, you no longer have a spot on the roster. That is what Sarkisian said almost three years ago. He has since changed his mind.
Derek Williams is back at Texas.
Defensive back Derek Williams Jr. made 43 tackles for the Longhorns in 2025. The redshirt sophomore announced his decision to enter the transfer portal on Dec. 11.
Less than 30 days later, Williams announced his decision to withdraw his name from the transfer portal and return to Texas. He is going to re-sign with the Longhorns.
This obviously goes against what Steve Sarkisian said in 2023. He allowed a player who entered the transfer portal to come back.
