Sydney Sweeney took to Instagram to celebrate the wrap of her newest film, a biopic about landmark female boxer Christy Martin. The film, which does not yet have a confirmed title, is being directed by David Michôd, who previously directed the Netflix movies War Machine (which starred Brad Pitt) in 2017 and The King (with Timothee Chalamet) in 2019.
Sweeney, 27 years old, has become one of the fastest rising actresses in Hollywood in recent years thanks to her performances in films such as Under the Silver Lake, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, The Voyeurs, Reality, Anyone but You, and Immaculate, and TV shows such as The Handmaid’s Tale, Sharp Objects, Euphoria, and The White Lotus. She also hosted Saturday Night Live for the first time this year.
In an Instagram post commemorating production on her Christy Martin biopic wrapping, Sydney Sweeney wrote a lengthy caption to her more than 22 million followers in which she called making the movie one of the most “transformative experiences” of her life.
“I don’t usually write a lot in my captions but this movie and experience I feel needs more than just a few words. We have wrapped filming Christy Martin’s story and it has been one of the most emotional, transformative experiences of my life,” Sweeney wrote.
“Christy’s journey is so deeply inspiring, and having her by my side during this process was nothing short of surreal. There were moments on set where I’d glance over at her standing by the monitors, cheering us on, and I’d just become so emotional. Knowing what she’s endured, what she’s pushed through to be there in that moment—it made me want to cry,” she continued.
Based on Sweeney’s comments, she might believe her performance in the film may be a game-changing part in her career and may even help her earn her first Academy Award nomination.
“To the incredible crew in Charlotte—thank you for giving this project your everything. I’m going to miss you so much!! Your hard work, long hours, and dedication brought this story to life, and we couldn’t have done it without you. My castmates, especially Ben, thank you for your talent, your relentlessness, and for inspiring me to dig even deeper every single day. And David, our fearless Aussie, thank you for being the steady, passionate leader we all leaned on.”
“This story is so much bigger than just a film. It’s a testament to resilience, survival, and finding the strength to keep fighting. I can’t wait for you all to see it—not only because I’m proud of the transformation and the work I’ve poured into it, but because Christy’s story deserves to be told. And yes, you’ll get to see me kick some serious a– (like seriously kicked some a–… like I might’ve enjoyed it a little toooooo much while kicking a– haha), but most importantly, you’ll witness a story that’s as powerful as the woman who lived it. I’ll carry this experience with me forever. Can’t wait to share more.”
Having completed production earlier this month, the film will likely release in 2025. If it’s later in the year, it may be due to the studio that ultimately distributes it believing in its award season chances.
In addition to the still-untitled Christy Martin biopic, Sweeney’s upcoming projects include Eden, The Housemaid, Echo Martin, season three of the HBO drama series Euphoria, a remake of the 1960s Jane Fonda-starring cult classic sci-fi film Barbarella, a Kim Novak and Sammy Davis Jr. love affair film alongside David Jonsson and directed by Colman Domingo, and a potential Anyone But You sequel.
