The #13 TCU Horned Frogs unveiled their “spit blood” alternative uniforms for this week’s huge game against #8 Oklahoma State.
In a uniform reveal video published on Friday, Texas Christian University went full Halloween mode in anticipation of Saturday’s tilt.
“ɓoɹℲ ǝɥ⊥ ɹɐǝℲ 🩸,” TCU appropriately captioned the video.
Football uniforms, nor football uniform reveal videos don’t get a whole lot cooler than this.

So, I can hear some of you thinking, what is up with the usually purple and white adorned TCU football players and this red coloring, and what does blood have to do with a freaking horned frog?
Good questions.
First of all, the Texas horned frog is not really a frog, but is in fact a lizard.
Second, Texas horned frogs can actually spit blood… from their eyes!
That’s right.
TCU’s “spit blood” uniforms are inspired by their mascot’s very unique defense machanism
According to Wikipedia, which cites five different sources, “The Texas horned lizard, along with at least three other species of the genus Phrynosoma, also has the ability to squirt an aimed stream of blood from the corners of the eyes and sometimes from its mouth at a distance up to 5 ft.
“They do this by restricting the blood flow leaving the head, thereby increasing blood pressure and rupturing tiny vessels around the eyelids.
“This not only confuses would-be predators, but also the blood is mixed with a chemical that is foul-tasting to canine predators such as wolves, coyotes, and domestic dogs.
“This novel behavior is generally observed to be very effective in defense.”
TCU’s defense doesn’t rank in the top 50 in either yards or points allowed, but that certainly doesn’t make their uniforms any less cool.

In 2013, TCU broke out this one-off alternate against LSU. The blood lines from the eyes are pretty killer. #TBT pic.twitter.com/gA3K920mCx

Is this the best alternate uniform tradition in sports? It might just be.
