Norway is the only country that has won more medals at the Winter Olympics than the United States since the chillier version of the international competition was held a little over a century ago. There are a number of events American athletes have managed to dominate, as well as some others where their performance has left a lot to be desired.

Here’s how many medals Team USA has won in every event at the Winter Olympics

The inaugural edition of the Winter Olympics was held in France in 1924, and heading into The Games at Milano Cortina in 2026, the 330 medals (114 gold, 1211 silver, and 95 bronze) the United States has taken home are second only to the 405 Norway has racked up while earning a spot on the podium.

America has emerged as a bit of a powerhouse in certain events, but it has some work to do ina few others when you take a look at the sports where Team USA has secured the most and fewest gold medals.

15. Biathlon: 0

  • Gold: 0
  • Silver: Also 0
  • Bronze: Obviously 0, again

Norway has helped pad its lead with the 12 medals it’s won in the biathlon (including six of the gold variety), as this is the only event where someone skiing and shooting on behalf of the United States has not managed to step foot on the podium a single time.

14. Ski Jumping: 1

  • Gold: 0
  • Silver: 0
  • Bronze: 1

Anders Haugen got the bronze in the very first ski jumping showdown at the Winter Olympics. However, he is still the only American who’s managed to get a medal in the standalone event.

13. Curling: 2

  • Gold: 1
  • Silver: 0
  • Bronze: 1

Many Americans convince themselves they could win a gold medal in curling if they really set their mind to it whenever the Winter Olympics roll around, but the numbers show that’s much easier said than done.

Team USA had to wait until 2006 to get its first medal in curling when the five men representing the stars and stripes got the bronze in Torino. That squad included Joe Polo and John Shuster, who were also members of the quintet that won gold in 2018.

T-11. Cross-Country Skiing: 4

  • Gold: 1
  • Silver: 2
  • Bronze: 1

Bill Koch was the first American to win a medal in cross-country skiing when he got the silver in the men’s 30 km in Innsbruck in 1976.

There was a lengthy wait between that one and what remains Team USA’s only gold, which was won when Kikkan Randall and Jessie Diggins conquered the team sprint in 2018. Diggins is America’s most decorated skier in this category, as she went on to win the 20 and 30 km in Beijing in 2022 as well as a bronze in the individual sprint that year.

T-11. Nordic Combined: 4

  • Gold: 1
  • Silver: 3
  • Bronze: 0

Ski jumping is one of the two disciplines in Nordic combined, as the score in that event is, well, combined with the cross-country skiing leg to determine who reigns supreme.

All four of the medals Team USA has won were claimed in Vancouver in 2010. Bill Demong got the gold in the 10 km large hill, and Johnny Spillane joined him on the podium with a silver while also coming in second in the normal hill.

That duo comprised half of the four-man team that won the silver in the 4 x 5 km team relay, which also consisted of Brett Camerota and Todd Lodwick.

10. Luge: 6

  • Gold: 0
  • Silver : 3
  • Bronze: 3

The United States didn’t have a luge team when the sport was introduced at the Winter Olympics in Innsbruck, and it’s been playing catch-up for around 60 years.

Team USA didn’t get its first medals until earning a silver and bronze in the men’s doubles in Nagano in 1998, and it repeated that feat on its home turf when the Winter Olympics were held in Salt Lake City in 2002.

Erin Hamlin was the first American to get an individual one when she took the bronze in Sochi in 2014, while Chris Mazdzer became the first male to check that box four years later with a silver in PyeongChang.

9. Skeleton: 8

  • Gold: 3
  • Silver: 4
  • Bronze: 1

This might not seem that impressive at first glance, but the United States trails only Great Britain when it comes to the countries with the most medals in skeleton.

Americans lead the men’s side with five, and while the women have managed to earn three since they were welcomed into the fold in 2002, they’ve been outmatched by the British juggernauts who’ve managed to take home six since then.

8. Ice Hockey: 18

  • Gold: 4
  • Silver: 12
  • Bronze: 2

The United States has historically been in the hunt for a medal in hockey at the Winter Olympics, but the men’s team has had some trouble getting over the ump. There was obviously a very notable exception in the form of the gold that was secured after the “Miracle on Ice” unfolded in Lake Placid in 1980, which came 20 years after Team USA got its first one Squaw Valley.

That squad has been forced to settle for second place on eight occasions, which was still better than the bronze that was won in Germany in 1936.

The women’s team has not missed the podium since winning the first of its two goals in 1998 (a second was added in 2018), as it has supplemented those with four silvers and a bronze.

7. Short-Track Speed Skating: 20

  • Gold: 4
  • Silver: 7
  • Bronze 9

It will be a bit trickier to address every single athlete who contributed to the totals as we enter the meatier section of this list.

However, you can’t talk about short-track speed skating without mentioning Apollo Anton Ohno, the American G.O.A.T who earned eight medals (two gold, two silver, and four bronze) while competing in the Olympics three times between 2002 and 2010.

Cathy Turner also deserves some credit, as she paved the way with four of her own (including two gold) in the 1990s.

6. Bobsleigh: 28

  • Gold: 8
  • Silver: 11
  • Bronze: 9

There’s no real use in getting too into the weeds when it comes to individual athletes given the team nature of the sport you might also know as “bobsled.”

The United States had a bit of a dynasty toward the beginning of the Winter Olympics, as Team USA racked up 14 medals in six events between 1928 and 1956 (which included five of those golds). The Americans were shut out in the next ten Games they competed in, but they’ve experienced a slight resurgence since the start of the 21st century.

5. Freestyle skiing: 33

  • Gold: 11
  • Silver: 13
  • Bronze: 9

The sports at the top of this list have slightly inflated totals due to the number of events that comprise each discipline, but the United States has still been a force to be reckoned with in most of them. That includes freestyle skiing, which is broken down into six categories: moguls, aerial, big air, ski cross, halfpipe, and slopestyle.

It’s a relatively new category when you consider it wasn’t introduced until 1992 (moguls and aerials served as the foundation for the rest), and the United States is the only country’s that’s secured at least one medal every year since then; no skier (American or otherwise) has more than the three David Wise has won with two gold and a silver.

4. Snowboarding: 35

  • Gold: 17
  • Silver: 8
  • Bronze: 10

Snowboarding is even newer, as it didn’t make its debut until 1998. However, the United States has had ample opportunity to pile up medals across the five disciplines that the men and women compete in, which were first supplemented by a co-ed team event in 2022 (which American also won).

America’s medal monopoly largely comes courtesy of the halfpipe, which both the men (9 medals) and women (11) have dominated with the help of the likes of Shaun White (the only person to win the gold three times), Lindsey Jacobellis, and Chloe Kim.

3. Alpine Skiing: 48

  • Gold: 17
  • Silver: 21
  • Bronze: 10

America takes the bronze on the all-time medal table for alpine skiing. Austria firmly dominates the sports with its 121 medals, as Switzerland sits in a distant second with a relatively paltry 66.

The men and women compete in five disciplines apiece, and the latter have more than any other country in the slalom and giant slalom (the only two categories where Team USA has the most). Mikaela Shiffrin leads the way for America on the individual front, as she won two golds and a silver during her two-Olympic run.

2. Figure Skating: 54

  • Gold: 17
  • Silver: 16
  • Bronze: 21

America has produced a number of notable figure skaters, a list that includes gold medal winners like Tara Lapinski, Michelle Kwan, Kristi Yamaguchi, Scott Hamilton, and Evan Lysacek. However, none of them were more accomplished at the Winter Olympics than reigning champion Nathan Chen, who has two golds and a silver to his name.

Team USA leads the way when it comes to individual medals in the men’s (16) and women’s (23), but Russia (and, previously, the Soviet Union) has historically had the edge in the pairs and ice dance competition.

1. Speed Skating: 71

  • Gold: 30
  • Silver: 22
  • Bronze: 19

Norway has also been able to pad its lead on the speed skating front (where there are seven different events on both the men’s and women’s side each year), as it has 87 medals to America’s 71.

However, neither country has anything on the one that has run the sport: the Netherlands, which has secured 133 of the 147 medals it’s won overall in speed skating.
