Team USA’s Women Are Absolutely Carrying The Men At The 2024 Summer Olympics In Paris

If Team USA manages to find itself atop the gold medal table when the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris are over, it’ll have the women to thank.

One week into the Olympic games, Team USA has nine gold medals to its tally. That ranks in a tie for fourth behind China with 13 and host France and Australia which both have 10. And while the USA leads the total medal tally with 42, the overwhelming majority of those have been silver and bronze.

Through one week of competition, zero American males have won an individual gold medal. Only the men’s four rowing team and the 4 x 100 freestyle relay team of Jack Alexey, Chris Giuliano, Hunter Armstrong and Caeleb Dressell have claimed gold for the Team USA Men thus far.

Team USA Women Have Excelled In Paris Olympic Games

On the flip side of things, Lee Kiefer (fencing), Katie Ledecky (1500M freestyle), Simone Biles (gymnastics all-around) and Kate Douglass (200M breaststroke), Torri Huske (100M butterfly) all have individual golds for the women. That’s in addition to gold medals in the women’s foil team competition and the women’s gymnastics team competition.

Team USA has had plenty of opportunities on the men’s side. Jagger Eaton and Nyjah Houston took second and third in men’s skateboard street. Bobby Finke, the reigning Olympic champion, took second in the 800m freestyle.

But things just haven’t fallen the right way for the American men to this point. Dressel has struggled mightily in his individual program in the pool. Ryan Murphy has had similar struggles in his events.

Meanwhile, the Team USA women have overperformed for the most part, claiming their first-ever medal in women’s Rugby Sevens and going 1-2 in the women’s individual foil.

There’s still plenty of time left in the Olympics games. And Team USA is expected to take home plenty of silverware in track and field. But it’s undoubtedly been an inauspicious start for the American men in Paris.
