Camila Giorgi, an Italian tennis star who reached reached the quarterfinals of Wimbledon in 2018 and was ranked as high as 26th, suddenly and mysteriously retired without any explanation earlier this month.

It was reported that the WTA had been unable to reach her or her family and phone numbers belonging to Giorgi, her father and her brothers were disconnected when the organization reached out.

Another report claimed that Camila Giorgi, who boasts more than 730,000 Instagram followers, retired to focus on fashion and becoming a lingerie model.

This week, Giorgi, 32, broke her silence regarding her sudden retirement, writing on Instagram, “I am happy to formally announce my retirement from my tennis career. I am grateful for your wonderful love and support for so many years. I appreciate all the beautiful memories.”

She also stated “there have been many inaccurate rumors about my future plans, so I hope to provide more information about the interesting opportunities I will have in the future.”

Coincidentally, USA Today and Italian newspaper La Gazzetta dello Sporto reported on Saturday that the Florence Prosecutor’s Office that Camila Giorgi, her father, her mother, and her brothers were under investigation for “several ‘gaps’ regarding tax returns, which have never been submitted.”

These same investigators believe that the former number one female tennis player in Italy has fled Europe and moved to the United States.

Giorgi had already made controversial news in 2022 when she was accused of using a fake vaccination certificate to gain entry into the Australian Open.

She would end up competing in the tournament, losing to top seed and eventual champion, Ash Barty.

However, Giorgi is still due to appear before the investigating magistrate of Vicenza for a preliminary hearing in case involving her relationship with a doctor who allegedly administered numerous fake COVID vaccines to patients in 2022. Giordi, singer Madame and 19 other suspects were indicted in the case.

The last time she competed in tennis was at last month’s Miami Open, losing to Iga Swiatek 6-1, 6-1 in the second round.
