The Texas Longhorns are searching for a new head baseball coach after firing David Pierce on Monday. Pierce had led the ‘Horns for the last eight seasons, taking the program to six NCAA Tournament appearances.

That included a trio of College World Series trips, though UT was unable to secure a national championship in that time. The heat on Pierce’s seat turned up after a 2022 appearance in Omaha, as the program has experienced a slight downturn over the last two years.

The Longhorns made a regional this year but lost to Louisiana and instate rival Texas A&M, effectively ending their season. The year prior, they fell in a Super Regional to Stanford.

Most would consider those seasons to be successes, but in Austin, the goal is a title.

Texas owns the third most College World Series championships with six, trailing only LSU and USC. That said, the program’s been trophy-less for the last two decades – and it obviously didn’t believe Pierce was the man that was going to bring home the hardware.

Given that prominence and history of success, most see a home run hire in the ‘Horns very near future. In fact, a large portion of the Texas contingency expects to nab a replacement currently coaching in the College World Series final.

Rumors are circulating linking TAMU baseball coach Jim Schlossnagle to Texas.

Rather than be excited about Game 3 of the College World Series, Aggie fans are unexpectedly holding their breath about a potential coaching change!

Much of the speculation comes due his ties to Texas AD Chris Del Conte.

Del Conte took over in Austin in 2017 following stints with other Lonestar State schools, Rice and TCU. The head baseball coach at his previous stop? Jim Schlossnagle!

With the Horned Frogs, Schlossnagle was a 3x National Coach of the Year, taking the program on five CWS trips. He became TCU’s all-time wins leader before bolting for A&M in 2022.

Would his past relationship with the Longhorns’ AD be enough to lure him to Austin? Time will tell, but unfortunately, the storyline has created an all-too-familiar feeling for the Ags.

TAMU left the Big XII to escape Texas’s massive shadow. Now, the ‘Horns have found a way to swipe the Aggies’ spotlight on the biggest stage.

And if the hire comes to fruition, A&M will be forced to line up against Schlossnagle next year in the SEC. Brutal!
