Boerne-Champion was declared as the winner of the high school football playoff game against Pharr-San Juan-Alamo North in Texas on Friday night. The Chargers were gifted a touchdown on one of the worst calls of all-time during the three-point victory.

That is not hyperbole.

Although one single play does not determine the outcome of an entire high school football game, it proved to be the difference. The blown call is even worse than you can imagine.

Boerne-Champion beat Pharr-San Juan-Alamo North by three.

Boerne-Samuel V. Champion High School, best known as Boerne-Champion, is located in Boerne, Texas, about 30 miles north of San Antonio. It enrolls approximately 2,100 students in Grades 9-12.

Pharr-San Juan-Alamo North Early College High School, best known as PSJA North, is located in Pharr, Texas, about 15 miles from the border with Mexico. It enrolls approximately 2,200 students in Grades 9-12.

Both schools compete on the 5A, D1 level of high school football competition in Texas. The Chargers entered the weekend at 8-3. The North Raiders entered undefeated at 11-0. They played in Laredo.

Boerne-Champion handed PSJA North its first loss of the season by a final score of 24-21.

However, the victors were gifted seven points on a horrendous blown call during the first half.

Texas high school football officials ignored a clear incomplete pass.

The specific call in question took place with just under 12 minutes left in the first quarter. The Chargers unleashed a deep shot down field on first down.

It was incomplete. There is no question that the pass was incomplete

The defensive back very clearly knocked the ball out of the wide receiver’s hands. The ball bounced on the turf so the entire Raiders defense completely stopped in its tracks to celebrate the pass breakup.

However, Texas high school football officials did not blow the play dead. They allowed the wide receiver to pick the ball back up off of the ground off of a pair of bounces (not just one bounce, two bounces !!) and keep running to the end zone. He was awarded a touchdown upon entry into the end zone. Boerne-Champion scored a touchdown on what was the most obvious incomplete pass in the history of football.

Here is how it looked from the field:

That pass is incomplete! There is no way to even argue it was a completed pass, fumble, and fumble recovery. The receiver did not have possession or make a football move after the initial catch.

The ball was out. Incomplete.

Yes, PSJA North could’ve won the game by scoring more points than the other team on offense or holding the other team to less points on defense. It shouldn’t have to beat its opponent and the refs. That first quarter touchdown proved to be the difference between a win and a loss. What a shame.
