Texas Tech football fans were not happy with officiating on Saturday night in a loss to Big 12 rival Colorado. At one point in the action, attendees were seen throwing trash onto the field in order to voice their displeasure with the crew.

That unhappiness came to a head late in the game when a targeting call was overturned. At the time, the Red Raiders trailed 31-20.

That targeting call was made against Colorado defensive lineman Amari McNeill when he sacked Texas Tech signal caller Behren Morton. The play came on fourth down, but the penalty would’ve effectively given the Red Raiders a free set of downs.

After a review, it was determined that the wrong call was made. Referees overturned the targeting penalty, which ended the possession and gave the ball back to the Buffs.

The home crowd was livid.

Trash soon rained down from the stands, prompting Texas Tech head coach Joey McGuire to beg attendees to stop throwing items onto the football field.

Deion Sanders commented on Texas Tech’s tradition of throwing tortillas from the bleachers prior to Saturday’s matchup. He wasn’t expecting to be pelted with water bottles and beer cans, too.

Colorado wouldn’t capitalize on the turnover on downs, but they would later extend their lead to 14 points in the fourth quarter of action. Texas Tech’s comeback attempt would fall short, with a Shilo Sanders scoop and score sealing the win for the Buffs.

Colorado improved to 7-2 with the victory. Texas Tech, meanwhile, fell to 6-4.
