French golfer Romain Langasque withdrew from the first round of The Open Championship with a back injury. He did so in epic fashion after a frustrating sequence on the eighth hole of Royal Troon Golf Club.

It was an all-time abandonment.

Let me be very clear here. I am not doubting that Langasque was unable to push through a legitimate injury. His body would not allow him to continue and the ailment likely played a role in the hilarious final sequence of his incomplete round on Thursday.

That doesn’t mean that the final sequence of his afternoon wasn’t hilarious…

Langasque, 29, began his day with a bogey on the first hole. He got it back with a birdie on the second.

And then the wheels fell off.

The Frenchman bogeyed again on four, five and seven. Eight was headed in the same direction. However, he never got to that point.

Langasque hit a fat wedge to begin the short Par-3, which put him in the fescue grass short of the green. His second shot was not any better. He hit it extremely thin.

The ball went flying over the green, which led him to call it a day!

Langasque’s shot had yet to settle before he took off his cap and retired from the tournament. He shook hands with the officials and his playing partners, C.T. Pan and Yuto Katsuragawa, and left the course. That was it. His Open Championship came to an early end after a poor shot on the eighth hole.

Royal Troon Golf Club is infamous for its difficult course conditions. The Open is arguably the most difficult major championship in golf.

For Romain Langasque to simply ~give up~ after an ugly start to his front nine of the first day is a testament to that challenge. His back injury doesn’t help. Hitting out of the tall grass when not 100% is a recipe for disaster, as we saw on Thursday!
