The Philadelphia Phillies And Baltimore Orioles Had To Stop Their Game For The Most American Reason Ever

In perhaps the most American thing you will ever see, the Philadelphia Phillies and Baltimore Orioles had to briefly pause their game on Sunday afternoon due to a passing fighter jet.

The incident came in the bottom of the sixth inning and caused Phillies reliever Spencer Turnbull to step off the mound

The jet was so loud that you could clearly hear it on the broadcast and home-plate umpire Mike Estabrook called timeout for Turnbull.

Now, you might be asking yourself “Why is a fighter jet flying over in the middle of the game?”

Phillies-Orioles Flyover Was Part Of Annual Baltimore Tradition

Good question!

That’s because Sunday marked the final day of the annual Maryland Fleet Week.

Maryland Fleet Week brings several ships,  including United States Navy and Coast Guard vessels and Army Corps of Engineers vessels to Baltimore’s iconic harbor.

It also includes a series of flyovers throughout the weekend from jets representing a number of branches of the military.

And lemme tell you, you haven’t felt anything until you felt the force of a fighter jet flying directly over you.

I was, admittedly, not a flyover guy until attending an air show at Pocono Raceway last summer. The feeling of military jets flying seemingly inches above your head is unlike anything I had experienced before. It’s an almost visceral reaction.

Just ask these guys.

As for the game itself, Baltimore went on to take an 8-3 victory after jumping on Phillies ace Zack Wheeler early in the ball game. The Orioles won both weekend games to grab a series victory over the National League-leading Phillies.

And Estabrook went on to eject Phillies manager Rob Thomson after an out-of-character outburst.

There’s a very solid chance these two teams will meet again in the World Series in October, which might mean another flyover is in order. Although, they’ll be a bit more prepared that time around.
