Following his stunning arrest on suspicion of driving under the influence after a scary car crash on Friday, fans of superstar golfer Tiger Woods wondered aloud why the 15-time major winner didn’t just hire a personal driver.
After all, it marked the second time in the last five years that Woods was involved in an accident that saw his vehicle flip over. The first time, Woods was fortunate not to lose his life after driving 83 miles per hour in a 45 mph zone.
That crash, which did not result in any legal charges against him, resulted in several broken bones and required emergency surgery.
“I’m lucky to be alive and also have a limb,” Woods told reporters in November 2021 at the Hero World Challenge.
Additionally, Woods was charged with DUI in 2017 when he was found asleep behind the wheel of his vehicle at 3 a.m. in his home of Jupiter, Florida. Like this instance, Woods’ breathalyzer test came back negative, but he completed a DUI diversion program after suffering an “unexpected reaction” to multiple prescription drugs.
And, of course, Woods famously hit a fire hydrant while fleeing his now ex-wife Elin in 2009 following a dispute over his infidelity.
Which brings us to the ultimate question: Why won’t Tiger Woods just hire a driver?
Tiger Woods Refuses To Hire A Personal Driver For Privacy Reasons
According to a report from People, Woods has no plans to hire someone to drive him around, even after the latest incident and being banned from driving with President Donald Trump’s grandchildren in the car.
Why?
Apparently, it’s a matter of privacy.
According to an anonymous source, the 50-year-old “doesn’t want anyone to watch over him or know what he is doing, and he thinks he is fine to drive.
We would contest that the evidence suggests otherwise. But that doesn’t much matter now, does it?
“He is not a social butterfly and prefers to hang around his home with his kids, or hitting balls, or playing video games,” the source continued. “He despises public scrutiny.”
Perhaps if Woods loses his license due to the latest incident, he’ll have no other choice but to hire a driver. The privacy argument sort of falls apart when you realize how many high-profile celebrities who are similarly private have personal drivers.
In fact, you could argue that having a driver would make things even more private, as people could not identify you behind the wheel. And most drivers are more or less sworn to secrecy, given their substantial salary.
But if there’s one thing we know about Tiger Woods, it’s that he’s notoriously stubborn. So it doesn’t seem as if his opinion is going to change anytime soon on this one.
