Tiger Woods lost some sleep and had difficulty preparing for The Open Championship due to recent events surrounding former President and 34-time convicted felon Donald Trump.

Tiger Woods, who has golfed with Donald Trump in the past and received the Presidential Medal of Freedom from him in 2019, told BBC Sport that the assassination attempt carried out by 20-year-old registered Republican Thomas Matthew Crooks with an AR-15-style rifle on Saturday, July 13, left him so shaken up that he wasn’t able to sleep, which messed up his preparations the following day.

As of mid-July, sportsbooks have Trump as the betting favorite to win the 2024 Presidential Election (with odds around -230, compared to current President Joe Biden around +500), despite additional pending criminal trials and recently released Jeffrey Epstein-related court documents that have Trump’s name “all over them,” according to California Rep. Ted Lieu.

“It was a long night [because of the assassination attempt] and that’s all we watched the entire time on the way over. I didn’t sleep at all on the flight, and then we just got on the golf course,” Woods said.

“I didn’t accomplish a lot [during Sunday’s practice] because I wasn’t in the right frame of mind. It was a long night and that’s all we watched the entire time on the way over here.”

Woods has won The Open Championship three times in his career: 2000, 2005, and 2006. He is returning to the tournament this year after missing the 2023 Open Championship due to injury.

As of Wednesday, July 17, the American public has yet to be briefed by a medical professional on the condition of former President Trump, either on the day of the failed assassination attempt or since. This week, however, Trump has been seen both golfing and attending the Republican National Convention.
