At his best, Tiger Woods is the greatest ball striker the game of golf has ever seen regardless of which club is in his hand. The man can produce magic with a wedge in his hand as everyone learned when he chipped in on #16 at the 2005 Masters, arguably the most famous chip shot in the history of golf.

Lately, I’ve been straight-up dead from 100 yards in on the course. I know that I need to go out to the range and practice area and just hit wedges all day but I can’t bring myself to do it, it’s just too boring. Instead, I peruse YouTube for Tiger Woods golf lessons like this one from two days ago where Tiger Woods and Freddie Couples teach us all how to hit a perfect 50-yard pitch shot.

Tiger Woods has two simple tricks to hit the perfect 50-yard pitch shot… The first tip goes back to something he learned from his father, Earl Woods, who would tell him to approach it like you’re teaching a 4-year-old to chip and if you want the ball to have a higher flight then you have a higher follow through and vice versa. His second tip is about the alignment of the club face, here’s the clip:

With the club face, Tiger Woods says with 50-yard pitch shots he likes to hit a slight draw. In terms of opening the club face, he starts with the club face open and pointing at where he wants to start the ball.

Tiger isn’t just opening the face some arbitrary amount. It’s very precise to match it to exactly where he wants to start the ball and that’s something a lot of amateur golfers, myself included, could remember to do on the golf course to hit better pitch shots.
