Tiger Woods Has A Great Explanation For Relying On His Son Charlie To Coach Him At The U.S. Open

Tiger Woods has relied on a number of golf coaches over the course of his legendary career, and he shed some light on why he’s decided to tap his 15-year-old son Charlie to step into that role ahead of the U.S. Open.

It’s very hard to imagine Tiger Woods will end up walking away with his fourth U.S. Open championship when the tournament kicks off at Pinehurst later this week. He needed a special exemption to earn a spot in the major in the first place, and he’s still grappling with the health issues that have repeatedly reared their ugly head since he was involved in a car accident in 2021.

Charlie Woods attempted to qualify for this week’s event but was forced to settle for coaching his dad following a rough outing on the course, and the teenager (who was also by Tiger’s side during a practice session at The Masters earlier this year) headed to North Carolina over the weekend to serve as his father’s right-hand man.

At this point, Tiger has absolutely nothing left to prove, and it would be reasonable to assume he decided to have Charlie serve as an advisor while gearing up for the tournament to take advantage of a cool father-son bonding opportunity.

While that certainly played a role, the 15-time major winner shed some additional light on his rationale during a press conference that was held on Tuesday morning.

Here’s what he had to say:

“I trust him with my swing and my game. He’s seen it more than anybody else in the world. He’s seen me hit more golf balls than anyone.

I tell him what to look for—especially with putting—and he gave me a couple little side bits today, which was great, because I get so entrenched when hitting certain putts to certain pins. I tend to forget some of the things I’m working on…

We have a great relationship and great rapport like that, and it’s a wonderful experience for both of us.”
