To say we’ve jumped the shark with the college football transfer portal is probably an understatement. That happened long ago.

But now, former LSU and Auburn quarterback TJ Finley is really pushing the bounds of what is and is not allowed.

Finley, a Louisiana native who first committed to his home-state Tigers, is in search of a seventh school in seven years after announcing his intention to re-enter the transfer portal on Monday.

TJ Finley Has Had A Long Road Through College Football

Let’s break down Finley’s trip through the college football world. After one year at LSU, he entered the transfer portal and found his way to Auburn.

Finley played two seasons at Auburn, making six starts before yet again entering the portal. This time, he wound up at Texas State, where he won the starting job and went 8-5 in the best year, statistically speaking, of his college career.

Prior to the 2024 season, Finley transferred to Western Kentucky. But he played just three games for the Big Red and, again, entered the transfer portal after the season.

Initially, Finlay found his way to Tulane for the 2025 season. But he left the Green Wave prior to the start of the season amid allegations of stealing a vehicle.

Finally, he wound up at Georgia State, where he threw for 1,244 yards, six touchdowns and seven interceptions in seven appearances. He went just 1-6 in those games.

Now, Finley is appealing to the NCAA for a seventh season and is back in the portal.

“The last two years have been the most challenging of my life. Balancing new fatherhood, injuries, and adversity off the field has been tested in ways football never could,” he wrote on Instagram. “Through it all, my love for the game never left. Football is who I am. I still love competing, leading, and playing at the highest level.

“Due to a season-ending injury sustained in 2024, I am applying for a 7th year and I’ve decided to pursue it fully. I thank God for carrying me through the storm and allowing me to put everything behind me as I move forward to 2026. I’m focused, healthy, and motivated. I look forward to finishing my career at a university that gives me an opportunity to compete, lead and finish strong. The story isn’t over.”

At this point, it doesn’t seem like the NCAA has any standing to win a case regarding extra eligibility. But you have to wonder who exactly wants Finley on their team in 2026, given his established track record.
