Japan kicked off the World Baseball Classic with a 3-0 start in group play in front of a friendly crowd at the Tokyo Dome. Fans who’ve flocked to the venue have also gotten to experience a dessert that has blown plenty of minds, as the rest of the world has some work to do on the ice cream sandwich front based on a viral treat that’s being served up at those games.
It goes without saying that the game being played is the primary attraction for fans who make the trek to a baseball stadium, but food has long been a vital aspect of that particular experience to the point where peanuts and Cracker Jack are immortalized in the lyrics to “Take Me Out to the Ball Game.”
Those items are a couple of a handful of staples you’ll find being peddled at concession stands and hawked by vendors weaving their way through the ballpark, which also include hot dogs, soft pretzels, and nachos.
If you have a sweet tooth, you can usually get your fix by grabbing some ice cream, and if you’re willing to pay a premium, you might even be able to get it served in a miniature baseball helmet emblazoned with the logo of the home team.
There was once a time when I thought that was the pinnacle of innovation concerning frozen dairy served up at a baseball game, but it turns out I was sorely mistaken.
An ice cream sandwich in the shape of the Tokyo Dome that’s being served up at the World Baseball Classic has taken the world by storm
The group stage of the World Baseball Classic kicked off last week, and the Tokyo Dome has served as the site for the Group C showdowns featuring Australia, South Korea, Chinese Taipei, Czechia, and Japan.
That venue boasts dozens of different food stalls where hungry fans can fuel up. They offer some of the aforementioned traditional American baseball fare as well as plenty of distinctly Japanese options, including bento boxes, karage, and yakisoba (the noodle dish that is basically the country’s equivalent of a hot dog when it comes to go-to at sporting events).
That includes a number of outposts that are simply known as the “Dome Shop,” which serve up an ice cream sandwich that went incredibly viral after Joshua Mellin, a freelance writer and photographer, shared a photo of the treat in the shape of the Tokyo Dome.

The dessert is officially referred to as “Tokyo Dome Monaka Ice Cream” on the stadium’s website, where it comes in both chocolate and vanilla and has a listed price of ¥400 (around $2.50).
Based on the many, many responses the post generated, Americans who are more familiar with an ice cream sandwich involving two usually underwhelming cookies were blown away by the concoction, which features a mochi-based wafer that encases the ice cream inside.
You’ll have to make the trek to the Tokyo Dome if you want to try that particular ice cream sandwich for yourself, but you might be able to find similar ones at specialty grocery stores that stock foods from Japan and Korea until the United States manages to up its dessert game.
