The upcoming Miami Vice reboot from Top Gun: Maverick and F1 director Joseph Kosinski is already star-studded, as Oscar winner Michael B. Jordan and nominee Austin Butler are set to team up for the film. According to reports, Tom Cruise is being eyed to play the villain.
While Tom Cruise is virtually synonymous with Hollywood heroes, he has played a villain before, most notably in Michael Mann’s 2004 film Collateral. Mann, of course, was the executive producer of the original series and directed the 2006 adaptation with Jamie Foxx and Colin Farrell.
Joseph Kosinski, meanwhile, worked with Cruise on Top Gun: Maverick and is also reportedly kicking around the idea of a Days of Thunder sequel with the actor.

Now, according to reports, Cruise is being eyed to play the villain in the Miami Vice reboot, which is set to begin filming later this year. Given that Cruise has a relationship with both Kosinski and Mann, it certainly feels like the conditions for him to take on such a role are in place.

2026 is set to be a big year from Cruise as he’ll be starring in Alejandro Iñárritu’s Digger, which will represent his first starring role in a non-action movie in close to a decade. Early buzz indicates that the film has a similar vibe to Stanley Kubrick’s Dr. Strangelove, and that Cruise could be in contention for Best Actor at next year’s Academy Awards.
