Tommy Fleetwood turned near-disaster into unexpected success during his final round of the PGA Championship. He nearly drilled a volunteer on the course with a wayward shot on the seventh hole.

The initial trajectory of that shot was far from his target. With a little luck, he was able to avoid a penalty and record an eagle.

Fleetwood was not in contention to win the tournament. He was 14 strokes back when he lined up to take his tee shot on the Par 5 seventh.

With his second shot, he attempted to find the green, which was located next to a water hazard. That shot sailed well past the pin before careening off a rock and bouncing back towards the hole. It almost took an unsuspecting volunteer worker’s head off!

Somehow, the shot not only avoided the water, but it then rolled safely back onto the green. It set up an eagle putt, which he sank moments later.

As mentioned, the disastrous shot nearly took out an on-course volunteer. The staffer was lucky the ball missed her as the ball sailed over her head. Another PGA Championship goer didn’t see the same fate!

On Saturday, a spectator was nailed by a wayward Jon Rahm shot. The sound of the ball ricocheting off the viewer’s skull was very audible to bystanders.

The fan appeared to be okay. Rahm spoke on the scary situation after the fact.

“I’m very impressed,” he said. “I haven’t seen a ball ricochet like that in a while… I told [my caddie], ‘Get the Sharpie ready because I’m going to have to give him something, like a signed glove…’ He took it great. I told him, if he was European and grew up playing soccer, he could’ve aimed a little better to get it closer to the hole.”

Rahm cracked a joke with the golf fan knowing that he was alright. He gave him some signed memorabilia as a way of saying sorry.

Neither Rahm nor Tommy Fleetwood played well enough to win. Rahm finished in a tie for eighth with a score of -4. Fleetwood finished 41st at +2 for the weekend. No bystanders were significantly harmed in this year’s edition of the PGA Championship.
