The penultimate stage of the Tour de France featured multiple nasty wipeouts. Ivan Romeo was left bloodied after a crash with 20 kilometers to go.
He was able to finish the stage despite his injuries!
It would not be true if I was to say that this was the worst crash I have ever seen on the Tour de France. However, I can confidently say that it is up there as one of the most brutal.
Rain, rain go away!
Stage 20 of this year’s race stretched more than 180 kilometers from Nantua to Pontarlier. Although it was not considered a true “mountain” stage, cyclists gained almost two miles in elevation during the ride. And if that was not challenging enough, much of the day was impaired by a steady rain.
As you could imagine, riding a road bike at such high speeds on wet asphalt is not easy. Some riders were able to avoid disaster, like Harry Sweeny.
😱 A scare for @harry_sweeny but the Aussie is still all alone in the lead!

😱 Frayeur pour @harry_sweeny, mais l'Australien est toujours bien en tête !#TDF2025 pic.twitter.com/Ll28xnLzNu
Others did not have that same fortune!
Ivan Romeo took a nasty fall on the Tour de France.
Everything was going pretty well for Romeo through the first 150 kilometers but the conditions ultimately proved to be a problem. The Spanish cyclist, as well as French cyclist Romain Gregoire lost control of their bikes while coming around a treacherous tight corner and crashed. Hard.
Their wheels slipped on the wet road, which caused them to hit the ground. Their momentum caused them to slide along the asphalt until they eventually came to a complete stop.
Ivan Romeo did not allow the wreck to end his race. His team helped to wrap him up, got him back to his feet and back on his bike. He finished the stage with the entire right side of his body in pretty rough shape.
Team Movistar shared a video of its star cyclist after his day had concluded. Romeo had multiple rips in his jersey and his shorts. Bloody road rash covered much of his right side.

Apasionante jornada de media montaña en el corazón del macizo del Jura y donde, una vez más en este @LeTour, volvimos a meternos en fuga.

I am in awe of these athletes. Not only did Ivan Romeo ride more than 100 miles in a single day, he rode the final 20ish miles with an injury that would cause most people to retire from the race. Warrior!
