Travis Hunter has been named the 2023 recipient of the Paul Hornung award given to the nation’s most versatile player. He joins the company of past dual threat winners like DeVonta Smith, Saquon Barkley, Christian McCaffrey.
Not everyone is happy with that decision, however, particularly the fanbase of a PAC 12 rival.
Utah supporters believe Sione Vaki was more deserving of the honor. The fellow award finalist played both safety and running back for the Utes this year.
Not only did he finish second on his squad in solo stops and tackles for loss, but he also totaled 536 all-purpose yards as a rusher, receiver, and return man.

For his production, Vaki was named a first-team PAC 12 performer as both a defender and as a specialist over Hunter.
The Paul Hornung award voters thought differently. They opted to give the honor to the Colorado defensive back and wide receiver, who was a do-it-all player for the Buffs in ’23.
Hunter racked up 721 receiving yards, in addition to tying for the team lead in interceptions. In some games, he was on the field nearly every snap, flashing his abilities as both a pass catcher and cover corner.

He was also named a first-team PAC 12 contributor on defense while being listed on the second team as a specialist behind Vaki.

The decision sparked an immediate reaction online.
“So, this was a hype award? Sione Vaki was the first-team PAC 12 all-purpose player, yet Hunter wins this?”
“Interesting they choose Hunter over Vaki who beat Colorado and whose team had a better record.”
“Vaki is much better than Hunter. Too bad everything is a popularity contest.”
“Vaki got snubbed.”
Utah fans weren’t the only ones upset with the decision. Many around the country referenced Hunter’s play on a terrible Colorado defense that allowed nearly 35 points per game.
“Did I watch the wrong Travis Hunter get cooked multiple times at cornerback?”
“I guess we are giving awards based on hype instead of accomplishments. This kid had one good game against TCU and then was a non-factor the rest of the year. Stanford WR toasted him for 300 yards, and he was constantly getting beat deep.”
Regardless of the criticism, both players have much to be proud of this year.
Hunter’s season ends with the award honor, which he’ll look to defend in 2024. Vaki will have one more opportunity to flash his versatility when the Utes play Northwestern in the Las Vegas Bowl.
