Urban Meyer’s one-year stint as head coach of the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2021 is widely considered to be one of the biggest head coaching disasters in the modern history of the NFL.

Meyer was hired by the Jaguars in 2021 but was first after 13 games after posting a 2-11 record and being involved in a litany of controversies. 2021 was also the rookie year of franchise quarterback Trevor Lawrence, who is in the midst of such a brutal slump that people are now beginning to wonder if he was actually the reason Urban Meyer’s tenure was so disastrous.

Lawrence has had a disastrous start to the 2024 season, as the Jaguars are 0-3, with Lawrence completing just 52.8% of his passes for 560 yards, two touchdowns, and one interception. Dating back to last season, Lawrence and the Jaguars have lost eight straight games.

The data shows that Lawrence has been particularly struggling with turnovers which can be an absolute backbreaker for offenses and therefore teams as a whole

“Lawrence’s 39 interceptions are third most in the league behind Josh Allen’s 47 and Mahomes’ 43 since he entered the league, but he has 59 TD passes (16th in the NFL) while Mahomes (109) and Allen (103) are the only two players in triple digits.”

“Lawrence also struggles with ball security. He’s lost 21 fumbles in 52 career games, by far the most of any player since the 2021 season began — Detroit’s Jared Goff is second with 14 — and already tied for the most in franchise history with Mark Brunell, who did it in 120 games.” [via ESPN]

With their eight straight losses, Jaguars head coach Doug Pederson now finds himself firmly in the hot seat. The Jaguars will look to get their first win of the season when they head to Houston to take on their AFC South Divisional rivals, the Texans, on Sunday, September 29.
