When the San Francisco 49ers took Trey Lance third-overall in the 2021 NFL Draft, the team thought they had their quarterback of their future. Despite only making 17 starts in college at North Dakota State, Lance had showed off plenty of top-flight traits that made him an attractive pick at the top of the draft.
But, due to injuries, inexperience, bad timing, and lack of polish, Lance’s NFL career has not worked out. A season-ending ankle injury in Week 2 of the 2022 season after being named starter eventually led to Brock Purdy becoming the incumbent start and franchise quarterback in San Francisco. After things not working out in Dallas last season, Lance hasn’t been signed in free agency, leading one CFL team to be interested in him.
Lance started one game in Dallas last year, the team’s Week 18 loss to the Commanders. He wasn’t great, but it wasn’t a total disaster either, as he was 20/34 for 244 yards and added 26 yards on the ground. You’d think that a player who will turn just 25 in May would be receiving more interest. But, to date, his free agency has left him without a contract.
The CFL’s Saskatchewan Roughriders are interested in bringing Trey Lance across the border. Here’s Pro Football Talk with more details.
Quarterback Trey Lance has not landed with an NFL team since his contract with the Cowboys expired earlier this month and possibilities for his next club don’t stop at the border.
Dave Naylor of TSN reports that the CFL’s Saskatchewan Roughriders have added Lance to their negotiating list. The move gives the team exclusive rights to negotiate a contract with Lance in the event he wants to continue his career in Canada.
Surely an NFL team is gonna take a chance on him, right? Someone has to give a guy his age with real upside a shot to make a roster. Guys like Tim Boyle are getting signed, so there’s no reason Lance isn’t getting a deal.
