The Miami Dolphins are facing a quarterback crisis after star signal caller Tua Tagovailoa suffered a(nother) concussion on Thursday night against the Buffalo Bills.
Backup quarterback Skylar Thompson deputized for Tagovailoa and completed 8-of-14 passes for 80 yards in what was mostly garbage time. But head coach Mike McDaniel has already stated that the team will bring in a new quarterback.
Who will that quarterback be? What about Dallas Cowboys backup Trey Lance?
Dallas traded a fourth-round pick to acquire Lance prior to the 2023 season. But he’s struggled in very limited action and is currently third on the Cowboys’ depth chart behind Dak Prescott and Cooper Rush.
So, why would Miami want Lance?
For one, Lance is still seen as a prospect with some upside. He’s just 24 years old and has only started 21 games at the quarterback position in college and the pros combined. But more importantly, Lance already has a relationship with McDaniel.
McDaniel was the offensive coordinator for the San Francisco 49ers when they selected Lance with the third overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft.
Dallas, coincidentally, is also in need of a running back. What do the Dolphins have an abundance of? You guess it, running backs.
Naturally, this led to Lance being one of the first names suggested in Miami’s search for a quarterback.

Nobody knows how long Tagovailoa will be out. But he has a lengthy history of concussions, and the Dolphins will likely be cautious with the QB they recently handed a four-year, $212 million contract.
Of course, other names such as Tom Brady have come up in those discussions. But that feels like more of a pipe dream than anything. Especially considering the massive money Brady is making from FOX.
Maybe Lance isn’t the answer for the Dolphins. But it sure seems like a natural fit.
