College Football Team Somehow Managed To Lose Despite 25-Point Lead With 20 Minutes Remaining

Tulsa Football Comeback Win UTSA
Tulsa Athletics

UTSA completely choked away Saturday’s college football game against Tulsa. The Roadrunners put up one of the worst fourth-quarter performances of all-time and somehow managed to lose a game they were winning by more than three scores with just 20 minutes left on the clock.

It was a total collapse of epic proportions for a program that has failed to replicate its success from the last three years during the first seven games of the 2024 college football season.

UTSA scored 14 points in the first quarter and 21 points during the second quarter. The Golden Hurricane ultimately went into the locker room down 35-7. Morale was low.

Tulsa looked completely outmatched on both sides of the ball and Starting quarterback Kirk Francis was benched in favor of Utah State transfer Cooper Legas.

It desperately needed a spark and got one right after halftime on a 35-yard scoop-and-score.

A field goal on the Golden Hurricane’s next offensive drive cut the score to 35-17, but the Roadrunners answered with a lengthy touchdown drive of their own. UTSA led Tulsa 42-17 with five minutes and 30 seconds left in the third quarter. The home team never gave up even though the outlook was grim!

Legas went deep to Kamdyn Benjamin for a 74-yard touchdown just a few plays later.

The score stood at 42-24 at the end of three quarters. There was not a lot of time left for a comeback, but there was still just enough time for a comeback.

Tulsa scored a four-yard touchdown and a two-point conversion to open the fourth quarter.

UTSA later kicked a field goal to go up 45-32 with five minutes and 21 seconds left in the game. Surely that was the icing on the cake, right? Wrong!

The Golden Hurricane found paydirt on the end of a 10-play, 75-yard drive to cut the lead to six points. Its defense turned right around to force a three-and-out.

Legas had to lead the Tulsa offense 92 yards in one minute and 55 seconds. He got there in one minute and one second. An extra point took the lead.

UTSA failed to answer the score and lost by one point despite a 99.4% win probability late in the fourth quarter.

The Golden Hurricane was down 42-17 in the third quarter. It won 46-45.
