Ty Simpson lost a lot of weight during the last few weeks of his final season of college football at the University of Alabama. The former Crimson Tide quarterback added 25 pounds back to his frame between the first of January and the 27th of February.
It required him to eat, a lot.
Simpson worked hard to get back to his playing weight before he throws in front of NFL scouts. Diet was the most important component.
Ty Simpson lost a lot of weight at Alabama.
In an era of college football that largely lacks loyalty due to NIL and the transfer portal, Simpson is the rare exception. The former five-star recruit waited three full years for the opportunity to start at Alabama.
He took over for Jalen Milroe in 2026 after attempting a total of 50 passes prior to his senior year.
Simpson ultimately led the Crimson Tide to a record of 11-4 and completed 64.5% of his passes for 3,567 yards and 28 touchdowns with only five interceptions. It was a season that was worth the wait.
However, Simpson looked much smaller at the end of the season than he did at the beginning.
According to Tom Pelissero, the 6-foot-2 quarterback lost a lot of weight due to a severe case of gastritis. The University of Pennsylvania defines gastritis as inflammation or swelling in lining of the stomach. Symptoms include a loss of appetite, nausea and vomiting and pain in the belly.
Simpson lost 25 pounds during the back stretch of the season. He reportedly weighed a meager 190 pounds by the time he played in the Rose Bowl— 25 pounds less than what he weighed in September.
Gaining 25 pounds in less than two months requires a strict diet.
Alabama played its last game on the first of January. Ty Simpson added all of the weight back to his frame in the 57 days between the loss to Indiana and the NFL Scouting Combine.
“I’m told he’s back up to 215; he is going to look the part,” Pelissero said.
Simpson had to restructure his food regimen to gain 25 pounds in less than two months. It required a lot of eating. No less than three meals a day. Often four.
“Lot of shakes, just getting in a routine of getting up in the morning, eating, drinking chocolate milk, eating lunch, eating the right meal, adding a shake to that, dinner, eating, adding a salad, just sticking to that.”
I would imagine Simpson also spent a lot of time in the weight room. The food does not do any good if the calories are not being put to work!
It will be interesting to see exactly where Ty Simpson tips the scale at the NFL Combine. There has been a concentrated effort to show up to Indianapolis in the best possible shape after gastritis wrecked his stomach. Did it pay off? He looks every bit the part!
