Trent Dilfer and UAB are undefeated during the 2025 college football season. They are 1-0.

The third-year head coach narrowly escaped an embarrassing upset loss in front of the biggest crowd of his coaching career thus far.

As positive as that might seem, the majority of college football fans in the stands were actually there to support Alabama State. The Mighty Marching Hornets also drowned out the Marching Blazers.

Trent Dilfer will be fired soon.

It would be shocking if Dilfer makes it through the regular season without getting fired. Then again, I said that exact same thing after Week 1 last year and here we are.

UAB players begged the university to keep Bryant Vincent at the end of his lone season as the interim head coach. The university did not listen.

Dilfer arrived to Birmingham in December 2022, which very quickly proved to be a moronic hire.

The Blazers went 7-17 in his first two seasons at the helm. Their seven wins were against far inferior opponents and even those games were a struggle.

Everybody expected Trent Dilfer to get fired by November of 2024 but he somehow managed to survive. He must have incriminating photos of the athletic director or something because I have never in my life seen a full-time FBS head coach prove so clearly incapable of every single job responsibility.

That leads us to Thursday.

UAB drew a big college football crowd… for its opponent.

Fan attendance has been minimal during the Dilfer era. It reached embarrassing levels last October and got even worse by November.

The 2025 season-opener was much better! Approximately 40% of the stadium was full.

However, the crowd was split ~60/40 in favor of the visitors. Dilfer was prepared for UAB fans to be out-numbered by Alabama State and started making excuses very early in the week.

His prediction was correct. The Swarm was swarming.

If that was not embarrassing enough, this was the score after halftime:

The Blazers ultimately pulled away at the end and won by 10 but the Hornets were right there throughout all four quarters. In no world should an FBS program struggle that much with an inferior FCS opponent.

Trent Dilfer is on his way out, again.
