UConn lost a college basketball game at Gampel Pavilion for the first time in 724 days against Creighton on Saturday. However, the Huskies were robbed of an opportunity to tie the game on free throws because of a controversial foul call on the final shot of the game.
It was ruled as a foul on the floor even though it appeared to be a foul during the shot.
As is always the case with sports of any kind, one single play did not win or lose the game for either college basketball team. UConn should’ve played better during the other 39 minutes and 49 seconds if it did not want to rely on the officials during the closing moments. A loss is a loss.
With that being said, the Huskies had a chance to tie things up at 66 with 11.5 seconds remaining. Senior Hassan Diarra got the ball near half court on the inbounds pass and dribbled up to the three-point line. Blue Jays guard Steven Ashworth served as the on-ball defender. He played tight to avoid a triple but was unable to prevent an attempt.
Diarra pulled up from beyond the arc and didn’t even have to lean into contact. Ashworth was all over him so the Big East officials rightfully called a foul.
If the foul was on the shot, Diarra would’ve gone to the line to shoot three. It was called on the floor. UConn kept possession but did not get a chance at three free throws to tie the game.
This foul from Steven Ashworth on Hassan Diarra was just called on the ground. Should it have been a shooting foul? pic.twitter.com/zZ6Ln2qjZO

Dan Hurley was irate, which is par for the course. He — and everyone else in the gym — thought it was a shooting foul. The Huskies were robbed!
Or were they? That is up for you to decide…
Either way, UConn drew up a horrible play on the next possession and totally choked. Alex Karaban missed a desperation heave and the reigning back-to-back national champions lost their first home game since Jan. 25, 2023 by a final score of 68-63.
